1st paragraph=Introduction

  • Introduce the two ways in which we communicate with each other (spoken conversation and text messaging). Include how they are different for one and other.
  • Include that we use many different devices (features) in these ways of communication and why this is.
  • Say whether you agree with the argument or not.
  • Explain what your objective is within the piece of writing and what you will be looking at.
  • Remember to remind the reader about the question asked.

2nd paragraph=Spoken conversation:

  • More in depth into what having a conversation actually is.
  • The three distinctive features from my transcript I want to describe are:
  1. Filler- Items of speech that allow you time to think, create a pause or to even keep the sentence flowing. It can also becomes humourous by the repetition of the devices. Examples of a filler ‘urmm’ and ‘hmm’.
  2. Rising terminal inflection-Is when people raise the tone of their voices on the last syllables of a sentences. This is normally used when asking a question. This can be used to suggest its an important part of the sentence, to check if the person is still engaged and is used when the listenor is confused about a certain subject.
  3. Ellipsis-An ellipsis is when parts of a sentences is missed out. It is still understandable, but it is an informal way of speaking.

  • Give an example from the transcripts.
  • Refer back to the question and explain how the devices are creative.

3rd paragraph=Text messaging

  • More in depth what text messaging someone is.
  • Include that text messaging is a type of communication which is used to transfer information quickly.
  • The three distinctive features from my Text conversation I want to describe are:
  1. Abbrievation-An abbrievation is a shortened form of the word or phase. examples of this are ‘lol=laugh out loud’ ‘wuu2?=what you up to?’ ‘wbu?=what about you?
  2. Emoticons-An emoticon is a pictorial representation of a facial expression using punctuation marks and letters
  3. Punctuation-Is a symbol that indicates the structure of a sentence.

  • Give an example from the text conversation.
  • Refer back to the question and explain how the devices are creative.

4th paragraph=Explain how text messaging and speaking has influenced eachother:

  • Explain how spoken language has influenced text messaging. Use the example emoticons.
  • Explain how text messanging has influenced spoken language. Use the example abbrievations.
  • Explain how this is creative.

5th paragraph=What these features (devices) can tell us:

  • Include that abbrievations are used more by the younger generation because text messaging is a fairly new way of communication.
  • Include how some slang words are an informal way of speaking. Also include that certain slang words are only used in certain social groups. Make a comparison.

6th paragraph=Conclusion

  • Conclude that speaking and texting are creative.
  • Link back to previous ideas and the question.
  • Develop an idea of where this could lead (the future).
