How do spoken language and text messaging influence eachother?

Spoken language has influenced text messaging in many different ways in which I’m going to choose the example emoticons and explain how it works. Emoticons are used in text messaging to show your facial expression and your feeling towards the person or certain subject because they can’t see you. If you were happy about a certain subject you would send a smiley face to show this so the person knows how your feeling. An example of this is ‘just finished school :)’ the punctuation marks at the end of that statement makes up a face, this is an emoticon. The majority of people that communicate via text message will use this device as it is very helpful for both people in the conversation however, people will not use this technique if they were constructing a formal piece of writing like a letter as it would be known as an informal thing to do. You can also use emoticons to show the way in which you are speaking to someone for example sarcasm.  ‘I love English sooo much :>:P’  this shows sarcasm by the emoticons present in the statement being as they are the faces you would pull naturally if you was being sarcastic with someone in person. If you were being sarcastic with someone face to face they would immediately identify it by the way you say it, the face you will be pulling and your body language whereas by messaging it is harder to portray this because they can’t see you, and this is why you add the emoticon. To summarise this, emoticons are mainly used in informal writing, via text message to show feelings and facial expressions which has been influenced by spoken language.

In this piece you show that you understand how paralinguistic features like facial expressions can be translated into text messaging. You support your ideas with clear examples and these examples developed well.

The main area for development is in the way you express your ideas. The ideas themselves are strong, however sometimes the sentences are too extended meandering. Here’s an example:

“Spoken language has influenced text messaging in many different ways in which I’m going to choose the example emoticons and explain how it works.”

This would be a lot clearer if it was broken into two simple sentences: “Spoken language has influenced text messaging in many different ways. I am going to explore how facial expressions have made their way into text messaging through the use of emoticons”

Have a go at other aspects of the answer that are complicated to read, and see if you can simplify them using this technique.

(by the way, since others have used this same example of just finishing school – it would be a stronger piece if you came up with a new text example)

    Righto!
